Heading home, day 1, Hovenweep

We’re not really heading home, but we are heading ‘towards’ home. Today we left our so-so campsite in the San Juan National Forest between Pagosa Springs and Durango, and headed west. Our destination was Hovenweep National Monument.

We visited here a few years back, in 2015. In fact we where here 6 years ago to the day… or was it 6 years ago June… oh well.

We stayed in the campground and there were only 2 other people here, which is about the same as when we were here last. The weather was warm but not too hot. We only stayed one day but before we left in the morning Tira and I did the Square Tower Trail which winds from the visitor center around the small canyon here, and passes by a number of ruins. About 800 years ago there were 2500 people living in the area in half a dozen small villages. They left behind some of the most striking stone structures anywhere.
