Cancelled Canoe Trip and River Walk

Nicholas and I were supposed to go camping/canoeing this weekend but we had to cancel the trip.

We got to our launch spot and there was some huge parting going on.  Drugs, alchohol, naked women… sounded ok to me but we felt maybe a little inappropriate for the boys.  So there we sat at 8pm in the dark, some drunk on a 4wheeler w/ no ligts on driving up and down the road we stopped on, and we had to call off the trip.  A very tough decision, the scoutmaster was obviously broken up but he was the first to ask the real question:  “is this a scouter safe place?”

So I drove back out to the river on Sunday because it looked like a nice spot, and it was.  Hwy 165 off of hwy 95, maybe 10 miles south of boulder city.

Problem is, it’s one of the few places you can access the river.  Because of steep banks and rocks and washes and sand, you can’t just drive up to the river so that means the erea near Nelson’s Landing (where we were) was a mad house.  On Sunday when I returned there were hundreds and hundreds of people comeing and going.  Fishing, swimming, boating, skiing, diving and drinking.  Completely amazing.

Most of the crowds were south along the shore so naturally I walked north up the river bank an hour or more.  Remember rough area w/ steep walls and lots of rocks and sand.  It was not just a “walk” it was really a hike along the shore.  Sometimes I was a couple of hundred feet up going over hills I couldn’t get around.  I took a couple of pictures.

Yes, I actually had to walk over that ridge where the sheep are.

On the way to the river I stopped at some caves.  I didn’t think they would be as big or as cool as they were so I didn’t take my flashlight and I left the camera on the motorcycle so these pictures were taken w/ my cell phone.
